Pure Religion: Caring for Widows, Orphans and the Poor

James 1:27 · Psalm 68:5 · Series: Biblical Justice and Social Concern

“Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

James 1:27

Continuing our series Biblical Justice and Social Concern, Elder Vere Babona asks what true religion looks like. The world defines religion as ritual; God defines it as relationship and responsibility. James is not talking about going to church, but about being the church: each of us knowing our role and doing our part.

The target of pure religion: who we are called to care for. God is “a father to the fatherless and a champion of widows” (Psalm 68:5). In Bible times widows and orphans had no income and no voice. From the widow of Zarephath to the Greek widows overlooked in the early church, God has always cared for the most vulnerable, and the church responded by appointing the first deacons.

The test of pure religion: what we are called to do. Not just words but action, practical and personal: mercy that meets immediate needs, empowerment that helps people stand on their own, and advocacy that speaks for those who cannot speak. Like Jesus at Nain, we draw near to people in their grief.

The purity of pure religion: who we must be while we serve. Holiness without compassion is clean but cold; compassion without holiness is active but empty. We need both.

We cannot solve every problem at once. But with God’s help we can start one widow at a time, one orphan at a time, beginning with the needs right here in our own church and community. The service closes with a reflection from Pastor Duli Asi on Isaiah 61.

Reflect this week

  • Who is the widow, orphan or lonely person in your church or neighbourhood whom no one is seeing?
  • Is your faith practical and personal, or mostly words?
  • Where is God calling you to take the first step: to visit, to give, or to speak up?
