Outreach & Missions
A church that has always planted other churches.
Boroko Baptist has sent people out for as long as it has gathered them in. Some of what began here is now larger than what remains.
In the settlements
Where the work happens
Three long-standing outreaches in communities where formal institutions are thin on the ground and a church is often the one place everybody trusts.
Morata Shalom Baptist Church
A congregation in one of Port Moresby’s largest settlements. Its pastor takes part in the PNG Bible Distribution Project, and members from Morata have gone on into preaching and mission work.
Nine Mile Baptist Church
A congregation in the Nine Mile community, part of the Boroko church family: Sunday worship, fellowship, and care for neighbours, built up over years of being present.
Mangomine Children’s Outreach
Work with children in the settlement along the East Boroko hills, an area where at-risk and street-involved children concentrate. Early, patient, unglamorous work.
Church planting
What has grown from this corner
Boroko was the first Baptist church in Port Moresby, and for years it functioned as the base from which Baptist work reached the rest of the country. Mount Hagen followed in 1968 with twenty-two members, then Madang, Lae and Arawa on Bougainville.
Within the city, Tokarara Christian Fellowship began in 1973 as a satellite reaching students at the University of Papua New Guinea and the Public Service College. It has since grown larger than the church that planted it. Vadavada, Kilakila and Gabutu Baptist churches also trace back here.
From this building the church also ran the Light and Life Bible correspondence course in simple English, which reached many thousands of people across Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific long before anyone had heard of online ministry.
Partnership
Who we belong to
Baptist Union of Papua New Guinea
We are affiliated with BUPNG, a fellowship of more than 500 churches and some 85,000 members, with theological colleges at Kwinkya and Tekin and a national network of schools, clinics and literacy programmes.
Baptist Mission Australia
Australian Baptists have partnered with PNG Baptists since 1949 — seventy-five years and counting. The relationship is now shifting from support toward mutual sending.
Baptist World Alliance
Through BUPNG we belong to the Baptist World Alliance and the Asia-Pacific Baptist Federation, connecting this congregation to Baptists in more than 130 countries.
