Psalm 8 · Series: Who Is My Neighbour?
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars… what is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:3–4)
Continuing our series “Who Is My Neighbour?”, Pastor Duli Asi asks how much value we give to one another, and finds the answer in Psalm 8. David praises God’s majestic name and the vastness of His creation, yet at the very centre of the psalm is this wonder: God is mindful of humanity, and cares for us.
Pastor Duli draws out three points:
- God in His greatness: His name reveals His character, and His glory is declared in the heavens, the sun, the moon and the stars
- God’s greatness revealed in little things: the praise of children, a sparrow, the hairs on our head, faith as small as a mustard seed
- The significance of humankind: God is mindful of us, made us a little lower than the heavenly beings, crowned us with glory and honour, and gave us responsibility to rule creation as good stewards, not destroyers
Whatever your culture or community has labelled you, you are significant in God’s eyes. And if God is mindful of every person, then human life is sacred, and we must be mindful of each other too. That is where loving our neighbour begins.
Reflect this week
- What labels has the world put on you that God doesn’t?
- Who around you is treated as insignificant, and how can you show them their worth?
- How are you caring for God’s creation as a responsible steward?
