Genesis 14 · Series: Who Is My Neighbour?
God Most High is exalted above all, yet He chooses to be engaged in our lives.
Continuing our series “Who Is My Neighbour?” and our look at the names of God, Pastor Duli Asi turns to El Elyon, God Most High, the sovereign God. After last week’s messages on El Roi, the God who sees, and El Shaddai, God Almighty, we see that the Most High is not distant. He wants to be engaged in the life of humanity, He protects and covers His people, and He makes Himself known.
From the call of Abraham in Genesis 12, God’s plan was to bless Abraham so that all the families of the earth would be blessed through him. Abraham stepped out in faith, but he also failed: in a time of drought he went down to Egypt and told a half-truth about his wife. Even then, God intervened and protected His own. When Lot was carried off as a prisoner of war, God gave Abraham and his 318 trained men the victory.
On his return, Abraham met Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High. His name means “king of righteousness,” and Salem means peace. Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abraham, and Abraham gave him a tenth of the best, freely, as worship. Abraham refused to take anything from the king of Sodom, so that no one could rob God of His glory.
Melchizedek points forward to Jesus, our priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 7). Through Christ, God Himself has cut the covenant, and in Him we find righteousness and peace.
Reflect this week
- Where do you need to let go and trust God Most High instead of your own plans?
- Is there an area where, like Abraham in Egypt, fear has led you to a half-truth?
- How does your giving reflect worship, freely giving God your best?
