Philippians 4:8
“Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable… dwell on these things.” (Philippians 4:8, CSB)
Paul wrote these words from prison, chained to a Roman guard, yet his letter overflows with hope, joy and encouragement. His positive attitude was not based on his circumstances but on his identity in Christ. In this message, Elder Vere Babona walks through the eight qualities of Philippians 4:8 and asks what it would look like to build a Christian culture of positive attitudes in Papua New Guinea, starting in our own homes.
- Whatever is true: build a culture of honesty, at home, at work and online
- Whatever is noble: restore honour; lift others up instead of pulling them down
- Whatever is right: do right even when no one is watching, and refuse shortcuts like bribes
- Whatever is pure: guard the heart and mind, and hide God’s Word in your heart
- Whatever is lovely: choose attitudes that bring peace; be gentle, be a peacemaker
- Whatever is admirable: live a life worth imitating, and keep getting back up
- Whatever is excellent: pursue quality in all you do, whatever your work
- Whatever is praiseworthy: give thanks to God for His salvation and His people
Reflect this week
- Which of the eight qualities is hardest for you right now: at home, at work, or online?
- Is there someone you need to be honest with, make peace with, or encourage this week?
- What scripture could you put on the “doorposts” of your home to remind your family to think about such things?
